Why the right ghostwriter is worth every penny.

When it comes to hiring a ghostwriter, the choice isn’t just about cost—it’s about value.

Recently, I spoke with someone looking to create a family memoir about her parents. Their story wove together careers in medicine, a biotech startup, and humanitarian work in impoverished regions—it was a rich, complex narrative that deserved to be told with care and precision.

As we discussed my approach and timeline, she mentioned a writer offering to do the project for $40,000—far below my fee. Instead of discouraging her, I encouraged her to ask questions to better understand what each writer could offer.

Here’s what I suggested she should consider:

1. Experience Matters

“Have they written a full-length manuscript before? And more than one? Writing a book requires a different skill set than articles or marketing copy, especially when adapting to different voices and perspectives.”

2. Editorial Rigor

“Have they worked with a traditional publisher? That process polishes storytelling and elevates writing. Without it, the finished work might lack refinement.”

3. Production Expertise

“Can they advise on photo selection, book design, and even choosing paper stock? Do they have the knowledge to manage every production detail, from layout to printing?”

4. Professional Network

“Do they have relationships with editors, designers, and printers to ensure your book is of the highest quality? This isn’t a solo effort—it takes a team.”

5. Full Commitment

“Is this their main focus, or a side project? You deserve someone who will dedicate their full attention to your story.”

By the end of our conversation, she saw that choosing a ghostwriter is about more than cost—it’s about finding a partner who can honor your story with the depth, expertise, and care it deserves.

If you’re considering hiring a ghostwriter, ask yourself: what kind of story do you want to tell? And who do you trust to bring it to life?

Let’s talk about your story—and how I can help make it unforgettable.
