I'm with you there - that's why I would love to see more openness to the possibilities of an interfaith approach in Australia. As I suggest in my post, right now that's close to non-existent.

I do "consider that spiritual awareness is important", but disagree that it can be adequately represented by a specific faith.

Hi David, thanks for your comment - you make a good point. I believe that there is a dual role that chaplains can fruitfully serve: as a mentor-type figure and to offer a spiritual perspective in the school setting. A mentor need not be a social worker or psychologist: I've worked in settings in the UK where mentors come from a range of backgrounds. The second part of the equation will have no perceived value to anyone who doesn't consider that spiritual awareness is important to either adults or children - which I suspect is a fairly pervasive view in Australia.

Sally, I note that you are sitting on the fence with this one and state: "I believe that if done sensitively and well, the work of chaplains should benefit schools and children."

My question is what do chaplains offer that trained social workers, counsellors and child psychologists do not? I think the only answer is that they are cheap and untrained. Neither attribute that is valuable for our children.

Thanks for that beautifully worded and sensitive comment. I like your vision - may it come true sooner rather than later.

Sally,

I found this article wonderfully refreshing! I have a vision of one day listening to folks both conservative and liberal hold a conversation that includes actually listening to the other. Rather than trying interminably to convince the other party they're right, perhaps each side could help find where we all agree! Wouldn't it be amazing if all that energy we spend arguing our individual "case" were spent instead on making a significant impact on the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS?

You're right. It matter.
