James, the Bible and the gay question

Didn’t James do a lovely Bible reading at his sister’s wedding? I’m talking about That Wedding, of course: Catherine and William at Westminster Abbey.

James read from the book of Romans with such eloquence and emotion and clarity, he breathed 21st century vigour into an ancient text.

So the next day I did a bit of Googling: I wanted to know more about James’s background (was he an actor? a public speaker?) and whether he might have got a bit of coaching from a friend in the church – someone like, say, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams (now there’s a man with remarkable eyebrows).

What I found was two things: a) rumblings because James read from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible rather than the King James, and b) a Google quake of gossip about whether James is gay.

So the man is good looking, well groomed, and displays some passion, emotion and possibly a sense of awe of the divine. He must be gay.

Is it really hard to tell the difference between a man who reads his Bible well and someone who is gay? And is there a tiny dab of irony in this, given the at times tense relationship the Anglican church has with homosexuality?
