Farewell Chris O’Brien
Some of you will know that Sydney surgeon Chris O’Brien passed away last week. Two and a half years ago he was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, a particularly aggressive brain cancer. His survival has amazed many, but more than that his positive response has been an absolute inspiration. I worked with Chris last year on his memoir, Never Say Die, and was impressed by his unfailingly courteous and generous nature.
Chris O’Brien created a unique legacy, not only for himself but for others. He was instrumental in setting up Lifehouse at RPA, a cancer treatment and research facility that emphasises a holistic approach to cancer.
Chris’s family have asked their supporters to donate to Lifehouse rather than send flowers. I urge you to go to http://www.lifehouserpa.org.au , read about the work they are doing there and consider supporting them. I’ll be heading there later today to pay my respects to Chris with my donation. He embodied all that can be ‘positive’ in the face of cancer.
